Rock Lines- August 2012: Jon Lord, Asia, Neal Morse, Uriah Heep and Souvenir

Memorial to Jon Lord

On July 16th, Jon Lord passed away at 71 years of age. The former founding member of Deep Purple had been seeking treatment for pancreatic cancer passed away due to a pulmonary embolism.

Jon Lord’s heavy style of incorporating classical music with hard rock began with Deep Purple in 1968. His Hammond B3 signature tones and musical overtures were a powerful display of his immense talent and will live on indefinitely.

Jon appeared on 16 studio recordings with Deep Purple. Jon’s imminent sound is often copied. Songs such as: “Child in Time” with its classically inspired keyboard tickling of the keys, the fierceness of “Space Truckin’” and the intro to “Hush” come to mind as Jon’s testament to the traditional sound of Deep Purple and the sounds of the Hammond B3.

After the split up of the Mk III version of Deep Purple, Jon formed a group with Ian Paice and Tony Ashton aptly named- Paice, Ashton and Lord.  The band lasted a year and produced one album entitled: Malice in Wonderland.

Jon also recorded with Nazareth, Cozy Powell (RIP) and David Gilmour (Pink Floyd).

Jon eventually teamed up with Ian Paice to join David Coverdale’s band- Whitesnake. Jon was a member of Whitesnake (1978-1982) until the Mk II version of Deep Purple reformed in 1984 to record Perfect Strangers followed by a world tour.

Once again Jon’s writing and heavy keyboard sound would take the forefront to songs such as the intro of “Perfect Strangers” and the rhythm throughout “Knockin’ at your Backdoor”.

I had the privilege of watching Jon once in 1985 at The Richfield Coliseum near Cleveland, Ohio. Witnessing him tilt the B3 forward and backwards as he was performing was magnificent!

I also saw the Mk IV version with Steve Morse in Las Vegas on the heels of the Abandon release in 1998. The mature Jon Lord was inspiring to watch as he traded keyboard, vocal and guitar riffs with Ian Gillan and Steve Morse; much like Jon did with Gillian and Blackmore did years ago. The solo passages were moving and classically inspired, while the chordal dexterity and fluent phrasing was effective and simply stunning!

After retiring from Deep Purple in 2002, Jon briefly recorded two records with vocalist, Jimmy Barnes in Jon Lord and The Hoochie Coochie Men in Australia.

Jon Lord’s main focus after retiring from Deep Purple was focused on composing, recording and performing classical music solo or with various symphonies and orchestras in Europe.

Just prior to his passing, Jon was involved working with the supergroup- WhoCares featuring Ian Gillan, Tony Iommi, Nick McBrain(Iron Maiden), Jason Newsted (Metallica) and Mikko Lindstrom (HIM).

Earlier in July, Jon was forced to cancel a concert featuring his “Durham Concerto” in Germany.

There was even talk of reforming Deep Purple MK III by David Coverdale and Glen Hughes for a benefit concert. It would have been interesting to see who would have replaced deceased guitarist Tommy Bolin (Steve Morse?).

For several days after his passing, I was amazed at how many of his former musical partners displayed a landing page for a memorial view in Jon’s honor. Deep Purple, Glen Hughes and Whitesnake shut down access to all of their other website pages to focus on a memorial page for Jon. Respect at its deepest meaning.

Even the website of Uriah Heep displayed Jon’s passing as a headline above other Heep information and Jon wasn’t even in the band.

Meanwhile Ritchie Blackmore was busy-well- being Ritchie!

Jon Lord was a legend, master musician and a true gentleman.

I am happy you are not suffering and although we never met, my life is richer for hearing your musical voice of the Hammond B3.

RIP Jon!

ASIA
Asia photo used courtesy of: Mathew Becker.

Asia began thirty years ago when four of progressive rock’s most accomplished musicians came together to create the super group. The band features John Wetton (lead vocals and bass), Carl Palmer (drums), Steve Howe (guitar) and Geoff Downes (keyboards). The band members had previously been members of ELP, Yes, King Crimson, UK and The Buggles.

Now, Asia has a new CD out and the reviews are exceptional. The new CD is fittingly titled- XXX.
You may order a copy of the deluxe edition with accompanied DVD here.

Neal Morse

Many of you may not be familiar with Neal Morse. Neal is perhaps one of the busiest progressive rock musicians on the planet. The former lead vocalist, guitarist, and keyboard player and epic songwriter notably started his rising career as a member of Spock’s Beard.

After his faith led him to a solo career, he collided to form the supergroup- Transatlantic. Transatlantic featured Mike Portnoy (ex-Dream Theater on drums) along with bassist- Pete Trewavas (Marillion), Roine Stoit (The Flower Kings) on guitar and Neal Morse. Transatlantic is one of the most prolific supergroup in progressive rock history.

Since then, Neal has released and been involved with many side projects with Mike Portnoy and bassist Randy George (most notably on Testimony I and 2).

His solo release entitled One and the astounding writing and musicianship was a progressive rocker’s dream come true. Besides Portnoy, George, and Morse; One featured Phil Keaggy.

Most recently, Neal is involved in another supergroup- Flying Colors which features Morse, Portnoy, Dave Larue (Dixie Dreggs) on bass, vocalist Casey McPherson, and Steve Morse (Deep Purple) on guitar released their debut CD earlier this year. Flying Colors are planning a tour beginning in September.

Phew! Are you still with me?

On September 11th, Neal Morse is releasing a monumental CD of and it is an epic entitled- Momentum. The video of the title song blew me away. Here is the edited version.

Momentum features Portnoy, George, Morse, Paul Gilbert on guitar, and a bevy of additional musicians.

Neal also held “open” auditions for many of the positions within the touring version of his band through his website and Facebook (although Randy George will appear at all dates and Mike Portnoy a few) on the upcoming tour in October.

Don’t miss the Momentum CD or subsequent tour of this incredibly passionate songwriter, musician and his stellar group of musicians.

I guarantee you- Neal will leave you wanting more!

Uriah Heep in Ohio?

Uriah Heep have scheduled a short tour of the US in November. Mick Box and company have not performed in Cleveland, Ohio since the days of the old Cleveland Agora on East 24th street in the 1980’s.

.
Heep has performed at (Cleveland Municipal Stadium (World Series of Rock), The Richfield Coliseum, Blossom Music Center and Cleveland Public Hall during the height of their career in the 1970’s. Their upcoming tour has the band scheduled in a suburb of Pittsburgh with no dates scheduled in Ohio.

It would be fantastic if the House of Blues or some club could book the band.

Throughout 40+ years of existence of Uriah Heep, I’ve seen the band 17 times in Ohio. I would like to see them again, a little closer to home.

If you’re interested in booking Uriah Heep contact: Paradise Artists.

Thank you.

Souvenir Anyone?
Souvenir

I am looking forward to attending a private party soon. The Cleveland based band Souvenir hosts a reunion show every couple of years. Souvenir was one of the regular house bands scheduled at the old Cleveland Agora in the late 1970’s on Friday or Saturday evenings.

Several of the former members Souvenir went on to work with other professional artists such as Joan Jett, Michael Stanley, Glen Burtnik, Blondie,  and Lana Lane.
Souvenir was once considered the finest club band in the State of Ohio.

Look for photos and information of the gig featured in the next Rock Lines regarding this very special talented band!

BRONZE-cropped.jpgBronze Records
Gerry Bron, who managed and produced Uriah Heep for many years, passed away at 79 years old. Gerry ran his own record company- Bronze Records. He managed other English bands and recording artists such as Manfred Mann, Osibisa, Motorhead, Girlschool, Colosseum, The Damned, Kim Mitchell and Gene Pitney.

Uriah_Heep_Fin Costello.jpg
Uriah Heep "The Classic Lineup" (

Many bands over the years have felt they've been through some strange circumstances concerning promoters, poor management, record deals gone sour and millions of dollars lost revenue. Uriah Heep's first manager, Gerry Bron and members of the band have often felt the movie, Spinal Tap- was written based on some of their strangest adventures. Several other heavy metal bands have felt the same way.

ohio_express_cropped.jpgThe Ohio Express

Ironically, perhaps the most bizarre tales documented of strange stories come from Mansfield, Ohio's own The Ohio Express. The Ohio Express, The Music Explosion (another Mansfield, Ohio based band), and Cincinatti's The Lemon Pipers all shared the same management. Each band released hit records in the 1960's. You may read some of the bizarre tales of The Ohio Express here.

In January 2012, original band member Tim Corwin and The Ohio Express released a new CD entitled: Bubblegum Days on Goldenlane Records.

encore.jpgEncore

Congrats to Mansfield, Ohio recording artists- Encore. The young lads have booked a mini- 'LA Dreamin' California Tour to perform at the legendary "Whiskey A Go Go Club" in Los Angeles, California on July 7th with Hollywood Roses. On July 11th, Encore will also perform at "The Good Hurt" in Venice Beach California.

Rock Lines- June 17th 2012: Steve Smith and Vital Information, Michael Stanley and more!

Rock Lines has been on a bit of a break as of late. I will attempt to post on a monthly or semi-monthly basis. Between posting business blogs, working full-time and writing a new book; I've been pretty much going at warp speed. Stay tuned or at least- stay in tune!

30th_lg.jpg

Steve Smith and Vital Information will perform Monday, June 18th and Tuesday, June 19th at the Nighttown jazz club in Cleveland Heights, Ohio. Steve and Vital Information are celebrating their 30th Anniversary Tour.

Steve Smith and Vital Information just released a new live CD/DVD entitled- LIVE! One Great Night on the BFM Jazz label. The new CD is currently ranked #21 on the jazz album charts of BillBoard.

The Sonor Drum endorser and Hudson Music educator has also performed with Hiromi: The Trio Project, Steve Smith's Jazz Legacy, RagaBop Trio, Jean Luc Ponte, Steps Ahead, Montrose, Journey and The Buddy Rich Big Band. Steve Smith was recently awarded the 2012 Jazz/Fusion Drummer of the Year in Modern Drummer magazine.

Vital Information is an all-star lineup of keyboardist Tom Coster (Santana/Gabor Szabo), bassist Baron Browne (Jean-Luc Ponty/Billy Cobham), guitarist Vinny Valentino (Bill Evans/Jimmy McGriff and Steve Smith on drums, konnakol, and percussion. It is amazing to witness the musicianship displayed by Vital Information.

STEVE SMITH half size.jpgSteve Smith and Jim Carver at Nighttown.

Attending a Steve Smith Drum Clinic was where I got the idea to write my first book. Mr. Smith was gracious enough to provide a book review. Steve is one of the classiest and nicest guys in the music business today. Not to mention, the greatest drummer alive!

If you are a fan of jazz/fusion, jazz, swing, bop, groove, funk, or South Indian music you must catch Vital Information at one or both of the shows at Nighttown.

Steve Smith will return to Cleveland, Ohio in August for his annual Drum Fantasy Camp.

STEVE and Neal by mikedolbear.xom.jpg

Neil Schon of Journey has teamed up with former Journey drummer and current leader of Vital Information- Steve Smith to produce a new solo record entitled- "The Calling." Originally Steve Smith was asked to contribute to a select number of songs. The two stellar musicians clicked together so well in the studio the entire CD of 11 tracks was recorded in four days with keyboardist- Igor Glen. The new CD is expected to be released later this summer.

Tammy Henry Photography2.jpg

Congratulations to Cleveland's favorite son- Michael Stanley for winning the 2012 Excellence in Broadcasting for Radio Award from The Cleveland Association of Broadcasting! (Side Photo: Tammy Henry Photography.)

It's nice to see Michael be recognized for his radio acheivements at WNCX. No doubt, his Dad would be proud!

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to attend the show of Michael Stanley and the Resonators in Warren, Ohio on Saturday evening with The Jonah Koslen Band opening for Michael.

I am sure they packed the house and blew the roof off!

The photo below was taken from the show on Saturday June 16th in Warren, Ohio. Kudos to Joe Kleon for his usual great photography.

Joe Kleon 2012 Warren Oh.jpg

Michael Stanley photo credit: Joe Kleon- G-4Force Studios.

Michael Stanley's new CD-"The Hang" is one of his strongest and most emotional recordings in years. My favorite cut off the CD is:"Down in the Suck." The song features some killer guitar work from Mr. Danny Powers while playing tribute to the old Midwest lifestyle. Order your copy of "The Hang" today.

It has been a rough year or so for Michael, I wish you continued success in all you do!

American Noise.jpg

Sadly, Jerry Moran (far left in left photo), 59, one of the featured keyboardists in the Cleveland based bands- American Noise and also performed in Dragonwyck, passed away from pancreatic cancer on April 26, 2012. Jerry is the second member of American Noise we've lost.

Jonlord.jpgJon Lord

The update on Jon Lord (former keyboardist of Deep Purple) who has been undergoing treatment in Israel for pancreatic cancer is encouraging. According to Deep Purple drummer and friend, Ian Paice, "the disease was caught in the very early stages and all evidence of cancer cells reproducing are negative and hopefully the dormant cells are being wiped out." Here's wishing Jon Lord continued success as the "Battle Rages On."

Rock LinesThanks- Cleveland.com! April 29th, 2012

I want to thank the Editor and staff at Cleveland.com (The Plain Dealer). My recent Rock Lines Blog featuring David Spero, Dick Clark, Rock Hall of Fame and other topics was chosen as their Featured Blog of the Week out of 100's of other postings from various bloggers daily.

I realize there are a few typos and it's not one of my best (in my opinion) blogs, but; I am still thrilled. This is the second time I have had this honor, but a first for The Rock Lines Blog. Previously, my second business blog ever written on Cleveland.com was chosen as Featured Blog of the Week.

Many of the side projects I jumped into in 2011 took away from my writing in both time and creativity.

I wanted to get back to regularly writing blogs and a couple of books. It seemed impossible.

I've suffered from writers block before but this was on a much larger scale. Burnout, disappointment in poor business decisions and my closet friend passing had me in a strange funk.

Prior to writing the Rock Lines Blog that received recognition business topics were jumping through my head. I was able to spend most of last weekend writing. Perseverance had overtaken doubt. Suddenly, I realized I was back to my old form. Excitement, joy and happiness overshadowed me.

Questions remained. Had I lost my readers through meager and untimely posts? Was anybody looking forward to my thoughts? Did anyone care?

Then on Monday, I noticed my Rock Lines Blog was chosen as Featured Blog of the Week. Unbelievable timing! The response from my readers was the largest to date during the history of writing over 200 various blogs in various social media.

I can make a difference and so can you. Persevering is the key. It all starts within each one of us. We never know where life leads us, but after recognizing and enduring setbacks we do become stronger!

Oh, by the way- The best is yet to come!

Rock Lines: April 21st 2012- Rock Hall, David Spero, Dick Clark and more!

Congrats to David Spero of The Cleveland Rock n'Roll Hall of Fame. Finally having the induction ceremonies held at the Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio had to be a career highlight for Mr. Spero last week.

I had the honor of meeting Mr. Spero at the Autism Speaks Benefit Concert at the Rock Hall of Fame last October.
David_Spero_with_his_father.jpg
David and Herman Spero on the set of The Upbeat Show.

David started his career at age 13, holding the cue cards during the production of The Upbeat Show. Herman Spero (David's Father) was the producer. The Upbeat Show was aired on Saturdays featuring host, Don Webster on WEWS-TV with a bevy of international, national and local musical talent.

It was common for the local show to tape up to 10 acts per show. In return for appearing on The Upbeat Show acts would be booked to play surrounding local venues in the Cleveland area. Thus earning more financially and gaining exposure with the public.

David went on to becoming a Disc Jockey at WMMS until he became the longtime manager for The Michael Stanley Band. Later, Mr. Spero started his own management group and has managed many legendary touring acts including: The Eagles, Joe Walsh, Richie Furay,The Raspberries, Alice Cooper and Yusuf Islam (formerly known as Cat Stevens).

Dick Clark (82 years old) passed away earlier this week. Mr. Clark was an entire generations host with the weekly TV show- American Bandstand (1956-1989). Mr. Clark was the forever young looking teenager, who gave kid's something exciting to look forward to with new music, live bands and dancing. He helped set American music trends and record charting for artists. Dick was TV's first rock n' roll disc jockey.

Mr. Clark would go on to produce the ABC television shows: "American Bandstand", "Where the Action Is", "Action" and numerous Hollywood game shows as well as "Dick Clark's Rockin' New Years Eve."

In those days a band wasn't considered to have hit the big-time until they performed on American Bandstand. Several Ohio bands did including The Music Explosion, The Ohio Express, The Lemon Pipers, The Outsiders, The All Sports Band and The Michael Stanley Band.

It was sad to learn of the passing of 71-year old Levon Helm, the drummer/vocalist of The Band. I was aware Levon had been suffering from COPD for many years, however; it was news to me that he was suffering from throat cancer. Levon was a uniquely gifted vocalist who exemplified the term- "The Show Must Go On!"

nugent.jpg
(Ted Nugent photo used courtesyof: chascar.)

Ted Nugent made the news earlier this week and earned a meeting with Secret Service Agents regarding political hate rants towards President Obama. The common man would have been arrested for one thing or another, but Ted seems to have escaped being charged somehow. I am not a Democrat, however; I feel his remarks aren't serving Mitt Romney's political campaign well or his own career.

Nugent's opening slot for his upcoming tour with Styx and REO Speedwagon is still in the works, but it is safe to say... stay tuned!

STEVE SMITH half size.jpg
Rock Lines- April 5th 2012
Opening day on April 6th, 2007 will always be a day I will never forget. The Cleveland Indians home opener was snowed out during the game. Besides a snowstorm complete with whiteouts on this day; I would meet former Journey drummer Steve Smith and hear his excellent jazz/fusion band- Vital Information perform at Nighttown in Cleveland Heights, Ohio .

Upon reaching the bridge on Interstate 71 near Progressive Field the Cleveland Indians game was stopped due to a whiteout condition from the snowstorm. Rush hour in downtown Cleveland and I couldn't view the stadium from the highway. Treacherous conditions indeed!

I exited off the interstate onto Carnegie Avenue and slowly drove down through the mammoth Cleveland Clinic corridor, attempting to follow the Cedar Glenn Parkway and maneuver onto Cedar Road to find my destination.

The quant New-York style supper club that Down Beat magazine named one of the worlds "100 Great Jazz Clubs."was easily found.

I arrived prior to the band that evening at 6 pm. The show began at 8pm. Steve Smith and company arrived through the front entrance and not realizing how approachable Steve was- I asked him to autograph a drum head. He was very generous considering this was the band's first appearance at the club and I am sure he had more important tasks at hand.

Vital Information began the show on time to a packed house. I stood against a wall in an attempt to give the waiters and waitresses room to deliver meals and drinks to the seated guests.

The members of Vital Information are: Tom Coster on keyboards and accordion (Santana/Gabor Szabo)), Vinnie Valentino on guitar (Bill Evans/Jimmy McGriff), Baron Brown (Jean-Luc Ponty /George Benson/Billy Cobham) on bass, with Steve Smith (Journey/Montrose/ Jean-Luc Ponty/Steps Ahead) on drums and percussion.

The band opened their first set with a rousing version of an up-tempo song from one of their previous records .Several of the songs arrangements feature individual solos allowing each band member to shine on their expertise and stretch their own boundaries. Both sets heavily featured tunes from the "Vitalization" CD.

It was easy to see why Steve has been voted the "world's best drummer in Modern Drummer magazine"numerous times. The agility, dexterity, intensity, and complexity of his drumming skills were incredible. Odd time signatures, blazing speed, only brought two words to my mind- Buddy Rich!

I stood perhaps 15 feet away from watching a precision professional drummer display numerous short and extended solos. Mr. Smith also treated us to his version of Max Roach's "Mr. Hi-Hat".

South Indian drumming and konnakol vocals were featured in two of the songs from the Vitalization release. Steve taught us how to clap the beat to tune entitled- "Seven and a Half" written in 15/8 time signature, but counted as 7 1/2. A drum solo in 13/4 time signature was incredible to witness during the performance of "J Ben Jazz". I was in drummer's heaven!

At the conclusion of the show all band members remained on-stage to meet and greet the fans. Steve Smith is one of the most gracious and pleasant personalities to meet. His knowledge of the history of jazz, drumming, and his attitude are truly enlightening.

This would be the first time I chatted with Steve Smith. I would go on to hear him at his drum clinic in Lancaster, Ohio and after the show decided to write my first book. The third time we met I asked Steve if he would consider reviewing my new book. Mr. Smith graciously obliged!

To my knowledge Steve has never endorsed any products other than his own. I am so grateful that he took the time to read my unedited book and gave me such a kind review. The Sonor Drums endorser is one of the classiest musicians in the universe!

Davy Jones.jpg

I was saddened to learn of the passing of former Monkee- Davy Jones on February 29th. As a kid, I look forward to watching the weekly television show and hearing a brand new song every week. The various songwriters for the group wrote hit after hit.

Davy was my favorite member of The Monkees. His voice, accent, good looks and ability to win-over the girls displayed heavily in the series. The music accompanied to zany skits was MTV before it's time.

Reality sets in when you lose someone who seemed "forever young".

This week we have the passing of guitarist Ronnie Montrose. The former leader of the band- Montrose (with Sammy Hagar) was suffering from Prostrate Cancer. Ronnie's guitar licks and the rockin' songs of Montrose received lots of heavy promotion from Warner Brother's Records back in the mid-1970's. Unfortunately the band had a somewhat short –lived career. Ronnie Montrose ended up as a solo act and later assembled another band named Gamma. His guitar instrumental of "Town without Pity" is a wonderful rendition of a classic piece of music!

Ronnie was scheduled to perform in Cleveland, Ohio in May.

Former Deep Purple keyboard wizard- Jon Lord is undergoing Pancreatic Cancer treatment in Israel. The disease is believed to have been diagnosed in the early stages. The treatment Jon is receiving appears to have been successful and the cancer cells have gone into remission. Deep Purple is hoping for Jon's healthy return sometime later this year. My thoughts and prayers go out to Jon Lord!

velvetvoyage.jpgVelvet Voyage

Congrats to the Cleveland, Ohio based jazz/fusion band- Velvet Voyage for their recent appearance at the NAMM convention in Anaheim, California in January. Velvet Voyage appears every Monday evening, beginning at 8:00 p.m. at The Brothers Lounge in downtown Cleveland.

Don't miss this fantastic original jazz/fusion band- Velvet Voyage and order their debut CD "Velvet Voyage" here. Look for an in-depth article in the coming months covering the band Velvet Voyage!
